Cappadocia Balloon Ride: Why I Paid €110 in Soğanlı, Not €250 in Göreme

The Cappadocia hot air balloon price I paid was €110 for a flight from Soğanlı Valley. Operators around Göreme, the main tourist area, were charging €250 when I booked. Later it became €150 in Soğanlı Valley and €300 in Göreme, for what looked like the same sunrise ride. I went to Cappadocia during my 18-day trip through Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia and Turkey, and this was the one splurge I wanted to get right.

Prices and rules below are what I saw in late September and early October 2026. Check current rates before you book.

Cappadocia hot air balloon price: Soğanlı vs Göreme

Soğanlı Valley is a bit farther out than Göreme. Only 10 or 15 balloons fly from there on a given morning, compared with the crowded skies over Göreme. Fewer balloons means a smaller market, and the price shows it.

Distance from townLonger pickup and driveCloser

The trade-off is the drive. My pickup was at 4:30 AM, the bus spent about half an hour collecting other passengers, and the drive to the launch site took roughly another hour. If you want a longer sleep, Göreme is easier. If you want to save over €100, Soğanlı is the better deal.

Why the ride was cancelled three days before

Balloon rides in Cappadocia depend on wind, and they get cancelled often. Before I arrived, flights were cancelled for continous three days. Tourists get a full refund when the operator cancels for weather, which is worth confirming when you pay. I was lucky that there were flights on both days I was there.

Because of this, book a balloon flight on your first morning. I had a spare day, which I used for balloon watching once I completed the flight on first day.

What the 4:30 AM pickup and the flight were like

Before the launch

The crew served snacks while they prepared the balloons. It was dark, and the ground temperature was 6°C. We were told two rules : do not jump, do not hang over the side, and when told to land, sit and hold the ropes.

In the air

At about 800 metres the temperature dropped to 2 or 3°C. I wore two layers on my legs, three on top, a windcheater, two fleeces and two pairs of socks. I was not overdressed.

The flight ran well past the 45 minutes I had expected. Our pilot, Halil, kept the balloon low for a while because the winds higher up needed time to calm down. That meant a long, slow float over the valleys at close range.

Landing

The landing was on a truck trailer. After landing everyone got champagne or juice, chocolate strawberries and a medal.

What to wear and carry

  • Three layers on top, a windcheater and a fleece or two
  • Two layers on the legs
  • Two pairs of socks and closed shoes
  • Gloves and a cap if you feel cold easily
  • A phone strap or secure pocket, since you hold the ropes on landing

If the wind takes balloons away from Uçhisar

On next day the forecast said the wind would push balloons away from Uçhisar. So I booked a balloon-watching tour. Pickup was at 5:20 AM and I was back between 7:45 and 7:50.

The tour took us to a launching pad, a sunrise viewpoint and then to Love Valley, where balloons land. More than 150 balloons were in the sky.

If your budget is tight, the balloon-watching tour gives you a good share of the experience for a fraction of the cost.

How to book a balloon in Cappadocia without overpaying

  • Compare at least three operators, including ones that fly from Soğanlı
  • Ask for the refund policy on weather cancellations in writing
  • Confirm how many people share the basket
  • Ask what time the hotel pickup is, and how long the drive is
  • Keep two or three spare days in Cappadocia
